I had been working as a decorator for some years, although most of my work was of a specialist style; wood graining, broken colour work and several hand painted kitchens, knowledge I had learned at the Dulux training centre in Slough. A change of direction came about whilst I was doing interior design at the East Midlands College, a regular client (who I had done several broken colour schemes for) called one day ‘Phil we have had this idea for one of our rooms, what we are thinking of is a sunrise starting at a low level, turning into a cloudy sky and going over the ceiling into a night sky, and then in the darkest area we are having eighty LEDs fitted to represent stars, we don’t need reality, abstract will be fine, are you interested?’ Well what could I say; I’ll be there ASAP. The result can be seen here.
A later project came from another unexpected source, again someone I had worked for previously who had moved to France. This brief was entirely different, as it would have to be painted on a board to be sent over there. The client had bought a derelict stone building in a picturesque area with a lake close by, however the lake was obscured by a wood. As the wood could not be physically moved, I moved it with a paintbrush! We ended up with the lake seen through a window and fitted into a recess on the wall.
Recently I have produced several cartoon scenes in children’s rooms, of popular television and film characters.
A commission in progress at the moment is a scene on the Grand Canal in Venice, which is painted on a MDF panel 1.5 metres tall and will be mounted on a stair wall, for a dramatic effect when going downstairs.
While most of my commissions come from the south Cheshire area I can look at other places subject to a consideration for expenses.
As you read this I may be painting fish on a bedroom wall, clouds on a ceiling, or doing some of the many unique paint ideas that come in a flash of inspiration.
